Lol, I had heard that they did that! I guess Yugi just sounds like him once he grows up? ^^; It really is weird though.
Oh gosh I hope not. Especially for the movie. His voice just doesn’t fit Yugi at all. XD
Well. When Atem was little, he had Yugi’s voice.
Which sounded really weird as well. ^^; I dunno, I guess it kind of makes sense for the dub at least since they pretty much flat out said there that Yugi is Atem’s reincarnation. But I’d really rather they sound different. Personally I think maybe grown Yugi’s voice would be a bit deeper, but he’d still sound like himself and not Atem.
In the original Japanese, the voice actor doesn’t even try to make Yugi and Atem’s voices sound different, which makes it somewhat more difficult to determine which one is talking at any given time…..
So maybe 4kids, when dubbing, accidentally thought that Yugi was actually Yami and told Dan Green to do his Yami voice? Idk…
It’s kind of about how Yugi and Atem have both grown. Atem “grew up” much faster than Yugi during his life so he had a deeper voice at an earlier age than Yugi. (Let’s not forget puberty here plays a role too.) Tbh, even though their voices are different in DM, Yugi and Atem still sound similar. Because in the Japanese version Atem’s voice is deeper and more confident sounding but it still sounds like a voice that would belong to a teenager or a young adult. But in the 4kds dub, Atem sounds like he’s middle-aged. ~_~ (No offense to Dan Green, he’s awesome.)
So when they transitioned to GX featuring Yugi in his mid to late twenties, while he had Atem’s voice in the Japanese version he still sounded natural. In the dub though you hear Dan Green’s Yami voice coming out of Yugi and it’s like “Woahhh, it doesn’t matter how old Yugi is, that voice should not come out of someone as adorable as him!” But really it’s not hard to tell that it’s actually Yugi speaking in GX because he obviously doesn’t have the Millennium Puzzle anymore and Atem’s in the afterlife. Yugi grew up, that’s all. The only appearance Atem makes in real time in GX is in the very last episode of GX when Yugi’s teenage self duels Judai after he travels back in time.
